Prediction-Dietary Health

Today the big news was that the be-all and end-all study on low fat diets came out. The bottom line: there is no evidence that a low fat diet has any impact on heart disease or cancer.

It does not surprise me. We all have some relative somewhere who ate butter, heavy cream, eggs, etc and lived until 99.

What this means to me is that genetics are key. You should know your family's health history and understand it.

I think DNA and genetics are going to be the next wave in dieting (for health.) Already, pharma companies are seeing different results and side effects with drugs based on a person's sex, race and ethnic background. In other words, Celebrex may work better on a white woman of European ancestry than a black man of African Ancestry.

Eventually, people will have customized drugs based on their DNA and then, customized dietary recommendations based on their DNA. Some people may be allowed, even enouraged, to eat cheese and bacon, while others will have to avoid it at all costs.

The face of the world is just too varied for overarching dietary dictates.

If there is a start-up company out there that has plans like I have described, I would like to invest in it. It's the way of the future.
