Junior Vasquez/The L Word

Junior Vasquez

New York Magazine came today. NY Magazine used to be pretty good but it had a re-launch about a year (?) ago and it really sucks. It looks good but the focus has changed to be more celebrity/shopping driven and the quality of writing has declined significantly.

But I still find myself reading it.

Today there was a piece on Susanne Bartsch. I thought it was cool timing that it was coming not long after my post on clubs in the 80s. Reading it was weird because all of the Copacabana memories seem to be the same as mine. Did everyone hang with Marc Jacobs and Malcolm Forbes there?

But most importantly, in, like, the third paragraph the author, David Amsden, mentions DJ Junior “Sanchez.”

At first I thought, “Weird, another DJ named Junior with a Latin name and this isn’t even Spanish Harlem.” Soon it became abundantly clear that he meant Junior Vasquez.

Duh, duh, duh and even more duh.

How anyone can write an article about Susanne Bartsch and not recognize Junior Vasquez’s name is beyond my comprehension. What a square this guy must be.

Junior is legendary. He and I used to work out at the same gym on Water Street and he is really sweet, too. We have the same birthday as well (month and date, thank you.)

In other events, as I had hoped, “The L Word” is pretty good this year. I was about to spit blood and vomit because Jenny was visited at her waitressing job by a publisher from Simon & Schuster who got on a plane and flew cross-country to tell Jenny that she really wanted to publish her book. She also handed her a presumably large check. All this and there were no agents, attorneys or contracts in sight. Suffice to say my agent could barely get these people to flip a few pages much less get on a plane.

Anyway, lo and behold it got interesting. The publisher strongly suggested that deal was contingent upon marketing the novel as a memoir as “literary fiction just isn’t selling these days.” How prescient is that? Kudos to Adam Rapp and the rest of the team because no doubt this episode was shot a good 4-6 months ago, long before the “Frey” erupted. Can’t wait to see where this goes…
