Dateline NBC Loves the Pervs...
Tonight, Dateline NBC had on Part III of their series where they ambush potential child molesters.
They partner with the local authorities and a private vigilante group and engage men in conversations with mock underage children. A sex date is set up at the “child’s” parentless home. Before anything can occur, Dateline NBC pops out and begins interrogating the suspect. When the suspect attempts to leave the police nab him.
It’s a strange program. It’s kind of like a reality TV version of SVU and Dateline milks it for all it is worth. Very sensational. Yet they hide behind this auspice of doing the community a favor.
I actually feel bad for a lot of these men. I say that because there are actually no children involved in the broadcast so there are no children to feel bad for. It’s unclear whether any of these men have ever actually done anything more than fantasize.
The reason I feel bad for them is that I believe that most child molesters have a terrible compulsion. I think they know it is wrong but that they are so lead by their uncontrollable urges and desires that they cannot stop.
I do no think that they can be reformed and I think the only way to ensure that they do not abuse children is to keep them away from all temptation. Total behavior modification.
I think it is unfortunate that Dateline NBC had nothing new to shed. No delving into what drives them, can they be helped, what kind of sentence do they face? All they do is milk it for sensation and have Chris Hanson ask the same laundry list of questions like he’s some junior human resources assistant.
I find television journalism to be terrible at handling its responsibilities. They always blow opportunities to educate and inform in favor of the cheap thrills.

I am thankful that there was no such thing as the internet when I was a young kid. It is good that there was not such a thing until I was in my 20's. I say this because I know that when I was around 13 or so I was always wanting to have some sex with an older man. I never got it, but I was always fantasizing about different situations happening to me. So, had I been able to make these things happen via the internet I would have been a big ole ho. God only knows how many partners I would have racked up in those young innocent years. And knowing this, I also know that I would not have been the victim. I knew what I was doing back then and I knew what I wanted, even though it never happened it was not due to lack of me trying. I am sure this sounds sick, but just telling ya the truth.
I don't feel sorry for the ones that take advantage of some poor child and by doing so ruins their childhood and probably the rest of their life, but I know that there must be kids out there like I was back then and that brings on a whole other side to the issue.
Kids are a lot smarter than we give them credit for.
OK, sorry to drag on, that is just my take on it.
Once again, great blog.
