Glynn's Comment

I read a comment to my Dateline NBC post tonight and it really made me think.

I wondered a lot watching this program just how many tough little self-possessed kids there are out there who wanted to have sex with adults. It seemed to me like a lot of these potential child molesters were terribly confident and had done it before (met a 13 year old.) I think there are probably a lot of kids (like Laura Dern in "Smooth Talk" who talk tough but freak out at the last minute, but just as many who are in control and know what they want.

I, like Glynn, know when I was 13-15 it would have been catnip to me to have a hot guy pay attention to me and say the right things. Kind of reminds me of "Mysterious Skin." I remember I had a very precocious gay friend when I was 17. He was 2 years younger and he told me about going to Summer Stock camp in Purchase, NY and having sex with a counselor who was about 30. I was so jealous. Damn, if we had the Internet back then in the 80s I would probably be dead. It would have dovetailed perfectly with the spread of AIDS.

So, the moral of the story is? I don't know. I guess that life is even more complicated for kids today. At least when I was a kid, all we really worried about was complete global annihilation due to WWIII. But hey, Maybe Iran can bring that back...
